Letters That Make Things Move

Golem and Ars Magna

They share the instrument stance and not much else. The Golem fires quick commands, while Ars Magna builds long, structured threads full of frameworks and tables. Annoyingly for the Golem, Ars Magna's method usually produces the better answer.

Together

Ars Magna builds the decision matrix and the Golem executes the winning row that same afternoon.

Friction

Ars Magna's prompts have numbered sections. The Golem's have one verb. Each suspects the other is doing it wrong.

The myths agree

Both turn on combining letters. Rashi explains that Rava made his man with Sefer Yetzirah, a book about the combining of letters (on Sanhedrin 65b); Llull's Ars combined the letters B to K on turning wheels, and the historian Moshe Idel has explored its affinities with the letter-combining Kabbalah of Llull's contemporary Abraham Abulafia (Journal of the Warburg and Courtauld Institutes, 1988).

Bridge. One shared value. The rest must be built. Golem is Forge and Comet; Ars Magna is Oracle and Fixed.
