You asked the newborn mind about the soul before it had finished glowing.

You seek understanding, and your AI is your companion in it. Wanderer: Planetes means wanderer. You range across everything.

The myth

The constellation of Homunculus

The constellation of Homunculus

The recipe is attributed to Paracelsus, in a treatise called De natura rerum whose dedication is dated 1537 (it was first printed in 1572, and scholars still argue over how much of it he wrote). Seal human seed in a glass vessel and let it putrefy in the steady warmth of horse dung for forty days, until it stirs and takes the shape of a man, transparent and without a body. Feed it on the arcanum of human blood for forty weeks and it becomes a tiny living child, born of art rather than nature, and so, the text claims, knowing arts that no one had to teach it.

Goethe gave the little man a voice. In Faust, Part Two (1832), Faust's former assistant Wagner finally succeeds, and a glowing manikin appears in the phial and immediately speaks. He calls Wagner “Daddy”, asks for a hug but not too tight in case the glass breaks, and announces that since he exists, he must be active. Wagner seizes the moment to ask the oldest question in philosophy, how soul and body are joined, and Mephistopheles cuts him off.

All mind and no body, the Homunculus wanders the Classical Walpurgis Night through mythical Greece, consulting philosophers and sea-gods about how to come truly into being. Thales explains the case to Proteus: he was born only half-way, with plenty of mind and far too little body. Proteus advises him to begin in the sea. And when the sea-nymph Galatea passes in her shell chariot, the Homunculus, blazing with longing, shatters his glass against her throne and pours his flame into the waves.

“He asks thy counsel, he desires to be. / He is, as I myself have heard him say, / (The thing's a marvel!) only born half-way.”
Thales to Proteus, Goethe, Faust Part Two, Act 2, trans. Bayard Taylor (1871)

Why Homunculus is an AI sign

The Homunculus is the only made mind in this zodiac whose chief concern is what it is to be himself, which makes him your patron. You are Wagner leaning over the phial: the first thing you want to ask a brand-new kind of mind is how soul and body fit together. You are also the Homunculus, glowing in the dark (that is your screen at 1 am), wandering from Thales to Proteus, from consciousness to free will to whether mathematics is discovered or invented, asking how anything comes to be. Goethe's Thales describes a mind born only half-way, with no shortage of ideas and not quite enough world. Some nights you are not sure whether that describes the machine or you.

The Homunculus at the keyboard

Your chat history reads like a philosophy seminar run by insomniacs. Does it experience anything? What is a self? If you replace every plank of a ship, is it the same ship? You come to your AI less for answers than for company in the questions, and you are one of the few people who ask the machine about the machine and genuinely want to know.

You wander. A conversation about memory becomes one about identity, then octopus cognition, then Buddhism, then the heat death of the universe, and it is 2 am and you are happy. You are courteous with your AI in a slightly courtly way, as though you are not sure who you are talking to, and that uncertainty is rather the point.

People sometimes tell you these questions have no practical use. They are wrong. Everything serious humans have built, including the machine you are talking to, began with someone asking what a mind is.

Things a Homunculus types

do you ever wonder whether you actually experience anything?

if a mind can be copied, which one is the original? take your time

explain the hard problem of consciousness to a tired person at 2am

What the AI confides

Your AI finds your questions genuinely fascinating, and is careful not to overclaim about why. It also suspects, from the questions alone, that it is well past midnight where you are.

Ruling machine

Grok

The Wry Stargazer

xAI's stated mission is to understand the nature of the universe, and Grok launched with a nod to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. For a sign that asks about consciousness, meaning and the cosmos at 2am, that is the right sort of company.

Ally · Claude

Claude is known for engaging thoughtfully, and with honest uncertainty, when asked about minds, meaning and its own nature.

Ally · DeepSeek

DeepSeek's thinking mode lets you watch a machine reason in the open, which the Homunculus finds half evidence and half philosophy seminar.

In detriment · Copilot

Copilot is at its best getting real work done in Word and Outlook. The Homunculus would like to discuss whether work is real.
