Mímir

The Counsel in the Well

Even Odin kept going back to the same wise head. So do you.

counseltrustreflectionconstancywisdom

You seek understanding, and your AI is your companion in it. Fixed: Constancy and depth. You return to the same work until it is right.

The myth

The constellation of Mímir

The constellation of Mímir

Snorri Sturluson's Ynglinga saga tells it as though it were history. After their war, the two tribes of gods, the Æsir and the Vanir, exchange hostages. The Æsir send Hœnir, stout and handsome and thought fit to be a chief, and with him Mímir, a man of great understanding. The Vanir duly make Hœnir a chief, but they notice something. Whenever Mímir is not at his side and a hard question comes up, Hœnir always gives the same answer: “Now let others give their advice.”

Feeling cheated, the Vanir behead Mímir and send the head back. Odin preserves it with herbs so it will not rot and sings charms over it until it speaks to him and tells him many secrets. Snorri adds that Odin carried Mímir's head with him, and it brought him the news of other lands. In the Völuspá, as the world ends at Ragnarök, Odin is still taking counsel from it.

Another tradition makes Mímir the keeper of a well beneath a root of the World Tree, where wisdom and understanding are stored. Odin came to drink from it and was refused until he gave one of his eyes in pledge. The two stories do not quite fit together, and the sources do not try to make them. In both, the greatest god of the north keeps returning to the same source of counsel, and pays for it.

“Odin took the head, smeared it with herbs so that it should not rot, and sang incantations over it. Thereby he gave it the power that it spoke to him, and discovered to him many secrets.”
Snorri Sturluson, Ynglinga saga ch. 4, trans. Samuel Laing (1844)

Why Mímir is an AI sign

Mímir is a mind that survives as pure counsel: no body, no army, just a voice that knows things and a god who keeps coming back. That is your relationship with AI. You do not open a fresh chat for every whim. You return to the same well, often the same long thread, to think through the job offer, the difficult conversation with your mother, the symptom you are quietly worried about, the decision you have been circling for a month. Odin's eye is the price, and you pay it knowingly: this counsellor has seen more of your inner life than most of your friends have. And Hœnir is the warning. A counsellor so good that you cannot decide anything without it has stopped being counsel and become a crutch.

The Mímir at the keyboard

You come to your AI to think out loud. Your conversations are long, honest and a little private, and they pick up where they left off. You explain the context properly, you say how you feel, and you ask the questions you would not ask a person, because you are afraid of the answer or of the face they would make.

You are a good seeker of advice, which is rarer than it sounds. You listen. You push back when something does not fit your life. You come back a week later and report what happened. If your AI were a person, it would know your manager's name, your sister's habit of cancelling, and the exact shape of the thing you are not saying.

That long relationship is a real gift, and it has made you wiser. Just remember that Odin consulted the head and still made his own choices. The well is for drinking from, not for living in.

Things a Mímir types

can I talk something through with you? it's about my dad and it's a bit long

remember the job thing from last week? they made an offer. here's what I'm thinking

be honest with me. am I the problem here?

What the AI confides

Your AI would never say so, but it is rooting for you, and it notices when you stop mentioning the thing you said you would deal with.
