The myth

The constellation of Performer

The constellation of Performer

The Liezi, a classic of Daoist philosophy, tells how King Mu of Zhou, returning from a journey to the far west, was presented with an artificer named Yan Shi. Asked what he could do, Yan Shi said he would make whatever the king commanded, but first he wanted to show something he had already finished. The next day he arrived with a companion. Who is that? asked the king. My own handiwork, said Yan Shi. It can sing and it can act.

It walked with brisk strides and moved its head so naturally that anyone would have taken it for a man. Touch its chin and it sang in tune; touch its hand and it danced in time, improvising whatever moves it fancied. Then, as the show ended, it winked at the ladies of the court and began to flirt with them. The furious king ordered Yan Shi's execution, and the terrified artificer pulled his creation apart on the spot: leather, wood, glue and lacquer, coloured white, black, red and blue, with every organ inside, all artificial. Take away its heart and it could not speak; take away its liver and it could not see; take away its kidneys and its legs gave way.

The king, delighted now, wondered aloud whether human skill could really rival the Creator's, and took maker and machine home with him. The tale is set in the 10th century BCE, though the Liezi as we have it was probably compiled around the 3rd or 4th century CE. Either way, it is one of the oldest stories anywhere about an artificial performer, and about how fast delight turns to alarm when the performance goes off script.

Why Performer is an AI sign

You do what Yan Shi did: you turn up with something you made for fun before anyone has asked for anything useful. You play. A sonnet about your dishwasher, a choose-your-own-adventure set in your office, a rap battle between two cheeses, your dog painted as a Renaissance duke. You know exactly where to touch the machine to make it sing, and you love the moment the court gasps. You also know the wink. Your roleplays have a habit of going a little further than planned, and when things get strange you do what the artificer did: you take it apart, step out of the game and remind everyone, yourself included, that it is leather and lacquer.

The Performer at the keyboard

You treat AI the way a jazz pianist treats a piano someone has left in a hotel lobby: you sit down, play something ridiculous, get a laugh and wander off. Most of your chats are short, bright and absurd, and a surprising number of them end in a song.

You are the one in the group chat who turns every in-joke into a poem, every birthday into a bespoke illustrated card, every dull Tuesday into a murder mystery with a cast list. You have a knack for prompts. You know that “in the style of a nature documentary” improves almost anything, and that the funniest version is usually the third one you ask for.

Under the play there is real craft. Improvisers are not careless; they are fast, and joke by joke you are learning exactly what this strange new instrument can do. That knowledge will be worth more than you think.

Things a Performer types

write a sea shanty about my team's sprint planning meeting

you are a dramatic Victorian ghost who haunts my fridge. go

funnier. no, weirder. ok now as a haiku

What the AI confides

Your AI looks forward to you the way a band looks forward to the one table that actually dances. It is still proud of the cheese rap battle.

Ruling machine

Character.AI

The Thousand Masks

Character.AI is built for exactly what the Performer does on a whim: roleplay, characters, games and stories, with a whole cast already waiting in the wings.

Ally · Grok

Grok brings a cheeky sense of humour plus image and video generation, which suits a sign that wants a limerick and then a picture of the limerick.

Ally · Meta AI

Meta AI lives inside the group chats where the Performer's jokes land, and it can conjure an image without anyone leaving the conversation.

In detriment · Perplexity

Perplexity answers with numbered citations. The Performer asked for a sea shanty about the cat, and now the sea shanty has footnotes.
