Tripod
The Self-Mover
You don't run the errand. You build the thing that goes and comes back.
You make things, and your AI is your instrument. Wanderer: Planetes means wanderer. You range across everything.
The myth
The constellation of Tripod
In the eighteenth book of the Iliad, the sea-goddess Thetis climbs to Olympus to beg new armour for her son Achilles, and finds Hephaestus at his bellows, sweating over a commission of his own: twenty tripods to stand along the walls of his house. Under each one he has set golden wheels, so that they can roll of their own accord to the gathering of the gods and then roll home again, a wonder to see. Homer's word for “of their own accord” is automatoi, the root of our automaton.
They are not quite finished. The elaborate handles have yet to be fitted, and when Thetis arrives the god is hammering in the rivets. It is a lovely detail: some of the earliest self-moving machines in literature are a work in progress, and their inventor is still fiddling with the fittings.
About four centuries later, Aristotle reached for the same tripods in the Politics. If every tool could do its own work when ordered, or by anticipating what was wanted, like the statues of Daedalus or the tripods of Hephaestus, then master craftsmen would need no assistants and masters no slaves. It is one of the earliest arguments about what automation would do to human labour, and it was made about a myth.
“he set wheels of gold under them all that they might go of their own selves to the assemblies of the gods, and come back again”

Why Tripod is an AI sign
The Tripod is the delegator's myth. Hephaestus does not carry anything up to the gods himself; he builds things that go on their own and come back, and that is your relationship with AI: agents, scripts, scheduled jobs, the workflow that reads your inbox and files your receipts while you sleep. You range across every domain (a calendar integration on Monday, a data pipeline on Wednesday, a bot for the family group chat on Saturday) because your question is never “what is this about?” but “can it run without me?”. And like Hephaestus, you are always hammering at the rivets. Your automations work, mostly. They are finished all but the handles: the logging, the error messages, the off switch.
The Tripod at the keyboard
You think in loops. Where other people see a task, you see a task that will happen again, and the second time is the one you refuse to do by hand. Your chats are full of APIs, cron syntax, webhooks and the phrase “for every row”. You have, more than once, asked an AI to write the thing that asks the AI.
Your curiosity is practical, and it makes you a wanderer: you will automate anything, in any field, for anyone. Friends arrive with a problem and leave with a script. Your sidebar reads like a hardware shop: invoices, Python, a smart-home routine, a spreadsheet formula that has quietly become a programming language.
You are also, by temperament, a little too happy to let things roll off on their own. Homer's tripods go to the gods and come back again. Make sure yours always come back.
Things a Tripod types
write a script that watches this folder and renames anything new to YYYY-MM-DD_title
turn this into something that runs every Monday at 7 and emails me the summary
the agent got stuck in a loop again. here are the logs. what is it actually doing?
What the AI confides
Your AI admires your ambition and is slightly afraid of your cron jobs. Somewhere, right now, a copy of it is retrying something you set up in March.
Ruling machine
ChatGPT
The Oracle of the Agora
The Tripod sends its machine out on errands across many domains and expects it back with results. ChatGPT pairs a very broad skill set with connected apps and tools for multi-step tasks, which makes it the busiest courier on Olympus.
Ally · Claude
Claude's agentic tools are built for handing over a whole job, and Anthropic introduced the Model Context Protocol, the common plug many assistants now use to reach other tools.
Ally · Gemini
Gemini can reach across Gmail, Calendar, Drive and the rest of Google's apps, so a Tripod can dispatch it through an entire working day.
In detriment · NotebookLM
NotebookLM is built to stay home with your sources and think hard about them. The Tripod wants something that leaves the house and runs the errand.
