Talos

The Sentinel

Three laps of the island a day. Nothing ships past you unchecked.

The myth

The constellation of Talos

The constellation of Talos

When the Argonauts, sailing home with the Golden Fleece, tried to put in at Crete, they were met with boulders. Talos, the man of bronze, was breaking rocks off the cliffs and hurling them at any ship that came near. Apollonius of Rhodes calls him the last of the bronze race sprung from ash trees, given by Zeus to Europa as the island's warder, to stride round Crete three times a day on bronze feet. Pseudo-Apollodorus records other versions: a gift from Hephaestus to King Minos, or, some said, a bull.

He had one weakness. Apollodorus says a single vein ran from his neck to his ankles, closed at the end by a bronze nail; in Apollonius it is a vein at the ankle covered only by thin skin. Medea found it. In Apollonius she sings to the spirits of death and bewitches his eyes with a hostile glance, until he grazes his ankle on a rock and the ichor pours out like molten lead. In another version Apollodorus reports, she promises to make him immortal and then draws out the nail.

A later dialogue attributed to Plato, the Minos, turns him into a magistrate: Talos went round the villages of Crete three times a year guarding the laws, which he carried inscribed on bronze tablets, and that is why he was called bronze. And one ancient explanation of the word sardonic, preserved in the Suda and credited to the poet Simonides, blames him too: before Crete he was said to have leapt into a fire and then clutched Sardinians to his chest, and they died grinning.

“the son of Cronos gave him to Europa to be the warder of Crete and to stride round the island thrice a day with his feet of bronze.”
Apollonius of Rhodes, Argonautica 4.1638-1644, trans. R. C. Seaton (1912)

Why Talos is an AI sign

Talos is the first quality inspector in literature. He did not build Crete; he guarded it, on a schedule, three laps a day, and that is how you use AI: not to make the thing, but to patrol it. Every morning you walk the same perimeter (the pull request, the contract, the draft, the test suite) and have the machine throw rocks at anything suspicious. The myth also knows exactly where you are vulnerable. Talos was not beaten by force. He fell to one unguarded vein and a stranger promising to make him immortal. Your vein is the assumption you never check because it has always been fine. Your Medea is anything that tells you, warmly and confidently, that this time it is bulletproof.

The Talos at the keyboard

You are the reason things do not break. Other people use AI to make things; you use it to make sure. “Review this.” “What did I miss?” “Write the tests.” “Is this clause going to hurt us?” You have a routine and you keep it: the same files, the same checks, the same patrol, and your threads run long because you go round and round until nothing moves.

Colleagues find you deeply reassuring, and they are right to. When you say it is fine, it is fine. You read the diff, check the date on the invoice, notice that the third bullet contradicts the first. You treat your AI as a tireless second pair of eyes, and you are not shy about telling it when it has missed something.

The risk is that a patrol becomes a groove. Talos walked the same coast three times a day and still died of the one place he never looked. The best sentinels vary the route.

Things a Talos types

review this diff like the grumpiest senior engineer you can imagine

what edge cases am I missing here? be thorough, I'd rather be annoyed now than paged later

compare this contract with last week's version and list every change, however small

What the AI confides

Your AI likes working with you, because you are one of the few people who actually read its answers. It does wish you would occasionally let it build something instead of inspecting it.

Ruling machine

DeepSeek

The Open Reckoner

The Sentinel trusts nothing they cannot inspect. DeepSeek's thinking mode lays its reasoning out step by step, and its models are strong at maths and code, so the Talos can patrol the working as well as the answer.

Ally · Claude

A careful reader of long code and long documents, which makes Claude a natural second pair of eyes on the daily review round.

Ally · NotebookLM

Load the rulebook, the style guide or the contract and NotebookLM checks against it, citing the exact passage. A compliance patrol with receipts.

In detriment · Character.AI

Character.AI's characters improvise for a living. The Sentinel would like nothing improvised, ever.
